In conjunction with the Idaho Potato Commission, APRE sponsored a group of registered dietitians from the United States and Canada for a behind-the-scenes look at the production of potatoes in all forms in the heart of potato country. Don Ordiorne, VP of Food Service at the Idaho Potato Commission; Dr. Maureen Storey, President and CEO of APRE; Dr. Jennifer Garrett, Senior Director of Health and Wellness at McCain Foods; and Duane Evans, Senior Director of Quality at J.R. Simplot led a small group of stakeholders in a hands-on immersion experience. The farm-to-fork experience provided insights into all aspects of potato production, research, and nutrition, including the opportunity to visit with 3rd and 4th generation potato growers, a trip to a farm at the beginning of harvest to dig fresh spuds, visits to potato manufacturing plants, and plenty of sampling of Idaho’s famous potatoes. Inspired by the knowledge, stories, and experience shared by all of the farmers and manufacturers, attendees really came away with a passion for potatoes!
